Evergreen Cooperatives

Evergreen Cooperatives was established in 2009 as an incubator for worker-owned cooperatives in Cleveland, Ohio with support from the Cleveland Foundation, the City of Cleveland, and a group of local anchor institutions including the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and Case Western Reserve University. Additional assistance in designing the Evergreen model came from the Democracy Collaborative and the Ohio Employee Ownership Center. Evergreen is a key component of the Greater University Circle Initiative (GUCI), in which some of Cleveland’s largest anchor institutions are attempting to create jobs and community wealth in some of the City’s historically disinvested neighborhoods. Currently, Evergreen consists of three cooperative businesses— Evergreen Cooperative Laundry, Evergreen Energy Solutions, and Green City Growers— and around 110 employees.
